While artificial intelligence is already transforming the present, another revolution, more discreet but potentially even more disruptive, is brewing in laboratories: quantum computing. For many leaders, the subject still seems distant, complex, almost theoretical. This is a strategic mistake. Because quantum technology, even in its nascent stage, already poses critical threats and promises major opportunities for the ASD sector. It's a silent revolution, and those who don't anticipate it risk a rude awakening.
the dual face of threat and opportunity.
Quantum technology is a double-edged sword that must be understood now:
- The Cryptographic Threat: This is the number one urgency. A mature quantum computer will be capable of breaking most encryption algorithms that currently protect communications, industrial secrets, and national security. Data encrypted today could be collected by adversaries and decrypted tomorrow. The threat is not future; it is retroactive.
- The Strategic Opportunity: Simultaneously, quantum technology promises to solve problems currently out of reach. In optimization, it could recalculate logistics plans of incredible complexity in real-time. In materials science, it could enable the discovery of lighter and stronger alloys. And its detection capabilities could give rise to sensors of unprecedented sensitivity.
This duality demands an immediate response: we must prepare defenses against the quantum threat while exploring potential opportunities.
the roadmap to avoid being left behind.
Waiting for the technology to mature is not an option. ASD leaders must adopt a proactive and informed approach starting today.
- Prioritize the transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). The work of migrating critical systems to new quantum-resistant encryption algorithms is a major undertaking that must be planned and launched without delay. It is an essential insurance policy.
- Launch pilot projects and develop "quantum literacy." This doesn't mean building a quantum computer, but starting to explore specific use cases in optimization or simulation, relying on the ecosystem of startups and laboratories to build expertise.
- Develop a long-term roadmap, aligning the company's strategy with the predictable evolution of the technology, to be ready to seize opportunities when they arise.
Quantum computing is not a question of "if," but "when." Leaders who place it on their strategic agenda today are those who will reap the benefits tomorrow and avoid disaster.
