Discover how Randstad Digital and MAN Truck & Bus built a scalable infrastructure with AWS to meet emission standards.
company background.
MAN Truck & Bus is one of Europe’s largest vehicle manufacturers and has employees in over 120 countries. Their aim is to make the automotive sector greener, safer and more efficient. MAN Truck & Bus has sustainability as a focal point in its corporate strategy and is committed to meeting the emission requirements in the European Union. To meet sustainability standards, the company turned to Randstad Digital, an AWS partner, for help.
the challenge.
MAN Truck & Bus faced a mandate to ensure that all its trucks sold within the European Union with a gross vehicle weight of 7,500kg had to publicly display emission information. MAN Truck & Bus needed to use the Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO) for its operations. The strategic goal was to migrate from an on-premises IT infrastructure to a cloud-based solution that would contribute to meeting emission standards.
Central to the challenge of this project was migrating MAN’s large database to the Cloud, without making major changes to the applications. This was made even more difficult by a strict deadline. As a result, there was only a short amount of time to find a way to implement VECTO reporting into its IT infrastructure.
There was also the need for MAN’s IT department to meet an internal cost reduction deadline within 8 months. With many variables to consider and a project of this scale being new territory for MAN Truck & Bus, it was clear that a more collaborative and streamlined process was needed.
the solution.
Randstad Digital worked with MAN to deliver a scalable infrastructure using Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), a fully managed container service that helps organisations easily deploy, manage and scale containerized applications. Having collaborated on a previous project, there was already an existing partnership with MAN. Together, Randstad and MAN delivered the migration by using AWS.
As part of the migration, MAN implemented AWS Fargate, a serverless computer engine that removed operational overhead. It also allowed them to focus on building applications without managing servers. To optimise and migrate MAN’s large database to the Cloud, Randstad implemented AWS Database Migration Service, which migrates database workloads to the cloud securely and efficiently, with minimal loss of data.
With AWS, MAN was able to prepare its database weeks in advance. Furthermore, MAN created a special caching service within AWS that was able to handle 35,000 carbon emission calculations per month. When it came to using VECTO, Man incorporated the tool into its existing product logic, using machines that could handle the intense VECTO simulations.
the results.
Randstad Digital’s collaboration with MAN Truck & Bus led to a 20 percent reduction in both costs and CO2 emissions. Plus, the entire migration to AWS took less than two days—36 hours—to complete. Randstad’s strategic use of AWS played a vital role in achieving this outcome. It ensured simple, reliable and low-cost infrastructure deployment.
The European Union expanded its emission standards in January 2024, so the partnership between MAN Truck & Bus and Randstad Digital is ongoing to ensure continued success.
